The holy site of Muktinath temple is surrounded by huge gigantic mountains from all sides and a prime destination for pilgrimage treks in Nepal. This famous Muktinath temple was architecturally built centuries ago in pagoda style that gives us a feeling that we are visiting Hindu Shrine, but as we look around us, we can see many Buddhist prayer flags fluttering, there are also monasteries nearby exhibiting us some local Buddhism insights.
While talking about the history, Muktinath Temple is believed to be built in the 19th century. In Hinduism, this holy place is also called ‘Mukti Shetra’ or the place for salvation. The 108 water spouts inside the temple area are another highlight in this area and believed that one who gets a bath from all these water sprouts gets purified. Now, Even after 200 years, devotees from all around the world visit the holy site with the same belief.
The pilgrimage site of Muktinath is located at the base of high altitude Thorong La Pass which lies on the route of the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek. Everyone loves to be here at Muktinath as it gives us a great chance to explore both Hinduism and Buddhism simultaneously. Also while descending from high passes; it gives some air with relaxation. However, there are other ways to be there, another popular route is Jomsom Muktinath Trek which is comparatively shorter and easier than Annapurna Circuit Trek. We fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, trek a couple of days to Muktinath, and then descend towards Tatopani, Ghorepani Poonhill, and back to Pokhara. Private heli tours can also be arranged at additional cost. It is recommended that you choose the best way that is suitable for you.
And another best thing about Muktinath is that it can be reached during any time of the year. However, to get more out of the trip, it is recommended to visit during the full moon day of August/September, the religious season when a large number of pilgrims gather around the site. Similarly, visit during local Yarlung festival, for more festive activities like horse racing and joining local party activities.
