Mustang Celebrates Yak Blood Drinking Festival
Mustang: Local inhabitants of Mustang region usually Thakalis celebrated the yak blood drinking festival that not only attracts the locals but the visitors from all over. The festival continues for a week.
During the festival, Yak’s nerves are pierced and the fresh blood is collected and served in a cup for drinking. It is believed that drinking fresh Yak’s blood works as medicine and antibiotic to germs for various diseases and illness as Yaks feeds on high quality herbs like Yarchagumba, Jatamasi and others in highlands. Joint Yak Keepers Group organized the event where local Yak’s blood and meat is being sold.
It may sound weird and inhuman activity but the locals say that it is tradition and should be compared to just like Yak’s blood donation for betterment of human. And people from Upper Mustang, Myagdi, Baglung, Parbat and Kaski districts have thronged Boksi Khola to drink the fresh yak blood from the very first day of festival.
